Helder G. Tomar  TOMAR, HELDER G., 19, of Harvey St., died Saturday at Rhode Island Hospital. Mr. Tomar was born in Boa Vista, Cape Verde, a son of Paulo and Virginia (Gomes) Tomar of Pawtucket. He came to this country 18 years ago settling in New York and had lived in Pawtucket for the past 17 years. Besides his parents, he is survived by 3 brothers, John, Lenny and Rendy Tomar, all of Pawtucket; 3 sisters, Odilia Cruz of Brockton, MA, Tereza and Gorette Tomar, both of Pawtucket; paternal grandmother, Doratea L. Gomes of Cape Verde; maternal grandmother, Rosamaria Ramos of Cape Verde and Pawtucket. He also leaves many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. His funeral will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in the Merrick R. Williams Funeral Home, 530 Smithfield Ave., Pawtucket. He leaves behind his wife, Maisie Viera; his four children, Laura Viera of Hyannis, Leroy Viera Jr. of Saudi Arabia, Lawrence Viera of Hyannis, and Lewis Viera of Nantucket; seven grandchildren, Ebony and Jerome Kenlyn, Alex and Kyle Richardson, Jarrell Wynns, Kiana Viera, and Shealynn Viera; two great-grandchildren, Denisa Mccoy and Deion McCoy; and many nieces and nephews. A native of Nantucket, Leroy was born on Feb. 11, 1920. He was the son of Frank Viera and Laura Teixeira of the Cape Verdean Islands. He was a veteran of World War II. He loved carpentry, playing guitar, cooking, and enjoyed watching the steamship leaving the docks in Nantucket. Leroy was a loving and caring man. He loved his family and would do anything for his children and grandchildren. He will be missed. Visitation will be Friday, April 25, 2008, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 West Main St., Hyannis. Burial will be Monday, April 28, at 10 a.m., in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. (Andrade) Pinto, 73, of New Bedford and Fairhaven, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, in Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was the wife of the late Richard W. Stevens Sr., and in 1965 she remarried a local detective Joseph Pinto, Jr. who sadly passed away in 1971. Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Joseph Andrade and Ana O. (Lopes Oliveira) Andrade, she attended and graduated from LaBaron Beauty Academy and worked as a beautician for ten years. She later went on to attend and later graduate form BCC and the Diman School of Nursing for her L.P.N. degree. A long time member of The International Church of the Nazarene, she served as a member of the Fairhaven School Committee, the first minority to do so for 8 years, resigning in April 2001. Mrs. Pinto was a Fairhaven Town Meeting member, a member of the Fairhaven Improvement Association, Fairhaven Colonial Club, Fairhaven Reading Buddy Volunteer, Fairhaven Community Service Learning with high school students, Fairhaven Partnership for Children Council, Annual Guest Reader in Fairhaven Schools, Cape Verdean Women's Club, New Bedford Historical Society, New Bedford Whaling Museum, both as a trustee and education Board Member, Early Learning Child Care Board in New Bedford, assistant to Mrs. Brenda Harrison at the Church Sunday School teaching 6 year olds, volunteer on Mondays in the church clothes closet distributing clothes, and a Fairhaven Improvement Board member. In 1977, she was the recipient of the Fairhaven Education Association Award listing her as "A Friend of Education" which was a proud moment for her as well as receiving volunteer awards from the Fairhaven Schools. Ann enjoyed traveling, gardening and children. In 2002, she received a millennium award from CVN President Tom Lopes from the Martha Briggs Education Society. She was also well known for giving tea parties to students in schools, and her many friends call her "The Tea Party Lady." She collected tea pots as a hobby and had over 240 tea pots in her collection. Survivors include two sons, Richard W. Stevens and his wife, Lori of Arlington, VA and Marc A. Stevens of Fairhaven; two step-children, Robert and David Pinto of Fall River; two sisters, Alice Conceicao and Anita Turner of New Bedford; her daughter-in-law, Diane Stevens Pontiff of New Bedford; four grandchildren, David Stevens Jr., Leslie A. Stevens, Matthew W. Stevens and Olivia M. Stevens; step-granddaughter, Tisha Pinto; Mrs. Pinto's long time companion, Domingo Rose of New Bedford. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late David J. Stevens, Sr. and Jeffery Stevens and sister of the late Armand O. Andrade, Joseph R. Andrade, Jr., Allen G. Andrade, Mary Bargasse and stepson Scott Pinto. Her Funeral will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2008, at 9 AM in The "International" Church of the Nazarene, 278 Pleasant St., New Bedford. Carolina Miranda Brockton Carolina (Fernandes) Miranda, 97, of Brockton died Friday, April 11, 2008, at Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton after a period of failing health. She was the wife of the late Jose Miranda. Born July 25, 1910, in Cape Verde, she was a daughter of the late Joao Fernandes and Carlota DePina Fernandes. Mrs. Miranda was devoted to her family and was a devoted Catholic. She was a member of S. Joao Baptista. She is survived by her children, Maria Miranda Azancoth of France, Maria Miranda Teixeira of Holland, Carlota Miranda Rodrigues of Holland, Eugenio Miranda of Brockton, Fatima Miranda Goncalves and the late Jose Miranda; she is also survived by 21 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Maria Leca  NEW BEDFORD — Maria "Lili" (di Linzinho) (Pinheiro) Leca, 99, of Fairhaven, died Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at St. Luke's Hospital, New Bedford after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Aleixo Leca. Born in Brava, Cape Verde, one of 10 children of the late Luis Jose Pinheiro and Henriqueta (Azevedo) Pinheiro, she settled in Fairhaven 35 years ago. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Fairhaven. Mrs. Leca was formerly employed as a stitcher at Calvin Clothing in New Bedford. She enjoyed crocheting and growing flowers in her garden. She is survived by three daughters, Madalena Yvonne Lopes and her husband, John of New Bedford and Diva P. Alves and her husband, Edgar and Marlise Pereira and her husband, Adelmo, all of Fairhaven; a sister Jovina Araujo of East Providence, RI; two grandchildren, Anniette and Emmanuel Alves, both of Fairhaven; and many nieces and nephews. Her funeral will be Saturday at 8:00 AM from the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM in St. Joseph's Church, Fairhaven. Eugenia L. Fortes  FORTES, EUGENIA L., 75, of Pleasant Street, a former employee of the Holy Name of Jesus Church, died Thursday morning, April 10, 2008, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Ms. Fortes was born Feb. 12, 1934, in Brava, Cape Verde, a daughter of the late Louisa Conceicao and Victor Lopes. She leaves her children, Antonio Fortes of Providence, Joseph Fortes of Florida, John F. Gomes of East Providence and Sonny R. Fortes of Providence, Charlene M. Fortes of East Providence and Matilda R. Fortes also of East Providence; 14 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; her sisters, Maria Lima of Pawtucket and Julia Fernandes of New Bedford; her brothers, Manuel Santos of Florida and Eduino Lopes of Mass. She was the mother of the late Louisa and Ortencia Fortes, and sister of the late Francisco Fortes, John Fortes, Jose Lopes, Joaquin Lopes and Anna Coelho. Robert W. Duarte Sr.  NEW BEDFORD — Robert W. Duarte, Sr., 69, of New Bedford died April 12, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Victoria (Costa) Duarte. Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Antonio Duarte and Eunice (Watkins) Duarte Carter, he lived in New Bedford all of his life. Mr. Duarte was formerly employed as a maintenance supervisor in the medical industry for many years until retirement. He served in the U.S. Army for 21 years. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal, 4 O/S Service Bars and Expert Qualification Badge M-16 Rifle. Mr. Duarte was a member of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Association where he served as a member of the color guard and the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World, Carney Lodge #200. He was a board member of the Bisca Tournament Club. He enjoyed playing bisca, poker and bowling. Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert Duarte, Jr. and his wife Kerin of Raynham; 2 daughters, Karen Hopkins and her husband Clyde of Montgomery, IL and Kim Fields and her husband Darrell of Providence; a step-son, Scott Costa of New Bedford; 3 brothers, David Duarte and his wife Pamela of Washington, DC; Bruce Duarte and John Duarte both of New Bedford; a sister, Donna Duarte of Providence; 7 grandchildren, Kyle, Brianna, Robert, III, Theresa, Bryce, Aaralyn and Olivia; many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
