"Nana" (Mendes) Wheatley, 66, of New Bedford, died Friday, August 8, 2008, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of Algie F. Wheatley, Sr. Born in East Freetown, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Lopes) Mendes, she lived in New Bedford for most of her life. She was a member of the Susan A. Sullivou Temple 94. Survivors include her husband; seven children, Shelley Mendes and her husband, Steven Burgo, Darlene "Skeet" Gonsalves, Doreen Mendes, Jeffrey Mendes, Sr. and his wife, Tieraney, Algie "Buddy" Wheatley, Jr. and his companion, Andrea Rose, and Joseph Wheatley, Sr. and his wife, Grace, all of New Bedford, and Curtis Wheatley, Sr., of Rhode Island; a brother, George Mendes of Fairhaven; four sisters, Adeline Delgado of Florida, Mae Pina, Cecelia Rose, and Dorothy Burr, all of New Bedford; 30 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Maria A. "Tynee" Mendes, and sister of the late Fred and Joseph Mendes. Her Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 10 AM at the International Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Amado, Peter EAST WAREHAM — Peter Amado, 84, of Aunt Hannah's Lane, died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Forest View Nursing Home. He was born in Wareham, a son of the late Henry and Wilhelmina Amado. Mr. Amado was a welder for the Quincy Shipyard for several years before retiring. He leaves one son, Peter Amado Jr., of Reno, Nevada. He was predeceased by 12 brothers and sisters. A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 A.M., in St. Patrick's Church, 82 High Street, Wareham, Ma. Burial will be private. Survivors include his parents; a sister, Alisia Bivins of Atlanta; his grandparents, Henry and Brenda (Silva) Grace of New Bedford and Mildred (Johnson) Bivins of Columbus, GA; his great-grandfather, John Grace of New Bedford; a niece, Ciara Stewart; and several cousins, aunts and uncles. He was the grandson of the late Sam Bivins. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 AM in St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Lopes, 90, of New Bedford, died August 6, 2008, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Juanita M. (Santos) Haynes-Lopes and the late Lucadia (Tavares) Lopes. Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Antonio and Maria Gloria Lopes, he lived in New Bedford most of his life. Mr. Lopes was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. He was formerly employed as an electrician at CommElectric for 35 years until retirement and also was a realtor with Century 21. Mr. Lopes appeared in many commercials with the Del Corral Modeling Agency. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II. Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Donald "Nonnie" Lopes, and his wife Esther, of New Bedford and Douglas Lopes of Falmouth; 3 step-daughters, Carol Haynes of New Orleans, Patricia Haynes of Providence and Dawn Haynes of Los Angeles, CA; a daughter-in-law, Lindy Lopes of New Bedford; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late James "Jayme" Lopes, Stephen Lopes and Anthony "Bumpy" Lopes and the brother of the late James Lopes. Frank "Chico" Lopes
LOPES Frank 'Chico' Lopes died on August 6, 2008 at age 90 in New Bedford, MA. He was born on October 4, 1917 in New Bedford to immigrant parents from Sao Nicolau, Cape Verde Islands, Africa. Before coming to New Orleans he had been a merchant marine, a Con-Edison employee, and a real estate broker. In New Orleans he worked extensively with the del Corral Talent Agency. He was an active member of the Hilton Health Club. He is survived by his second wife, Juanita 'Nita' Santos Haynes Lopes, two sons, Douglas and Donald (of New Bedford), step-daughters, Patricia Haynes of Providence and Dawn Haynes of Los Angeles, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by his step-daughter, Carol L. Haynes of New Orleans and her son, Troy Anthony Spooner of New Orleans/Houston. He was preceded in death by his sons, Steven, Anthony, and Jamie and by his first wife, Lucadia. His remains will be interred at St. John's Cemetery in New Bedford.

Survivors include four sons, Thomas of Florida, Edmundo and Manuel, both of New Bedford, and Antonio of Wareham; four daughters Erlice Rodriguez of Brazil, Iris Ribeiro of Hawaii, Helia Macedo-Fields of Marion, and Helena Morton of Florida; two brothers, Alcides Andrade of New Bedford and Jose Andrade of Brazil; three sisters, Bella Valles of Florida, Cizela Goncalves and Beatriz Castro, both of New Bedford; 26 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Nilo Macedo and Heloisa Castro, and sister of the late Joao deDeus Andrade, Joao deJesus Andrade, Irisalva Rodrigues, and Maria Barbosa. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 AM at St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Barbosa, Vanda (Barbosa) Miranda, Joao H. Barbosa, Alda M. Barbosa, Neila E. Barbosa, Agnelo H. Barbosa, all of Brockton; her stepchildren, Maria (Barbosa) Pina of Brockton and Valdir Barbosa of Cape Verde; her siblings, Elvira Alves, Maria F. Monteiro, Joao (Johnny) Alves, Joao (John) Alves, Antonio Alves, Ildo Alves, Agnelo Alves and Miguel Alves. She is also survived by several grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Leighton, Jr. Born and raised in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Manuel R. and Constance (Baptista) Monteiro, she lived in Bridgeport, CT most of her life before moving to Dartmouth in 1985. Mrs. Leighton was a parishioner of Our Lady of Assumption Church. She was formerly employed by Aerosol Techniques in Milford, CT for many years. She later was employed at the Stop & Shop on Dartmouth Street in New Bedford. Mrs. Leighton was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, class of 1947. Survivors include three sons, Dennis Francis Leighton, James Mark Leighton of Marlboro, and Kenneth Paul Leighton and his wife, Jacqueline of Smithtown, NY; a daughter, Lenore Jean Leighton-Pollock of Sterling, VA; two brothers, Joseph Monteiro and his wife, Margie of Wareham and Adolph Monteiro of New Bedford; four sisters, Evelyn Almeida of South Dartmouth and Mary Ames, Marion Barrows, and Betty Ann Fermino, all of New Bedford; four grandchildren, James, Jr., Tonya, Alicia and Leo; a great-grandson, Justus; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Nobre was formerly employed at Otis Air Force Base and later at Polaroid until retirement. In retirement, he worked as a bus monitor for Trembley Bus Company. He was a member of the Young Cape Verdean Athletic Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Andrews-Dahill Post 1531. Mr. Nobre served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Survivors include his wife; 3 daughters, Michelle Mattos and her husband, Paul of Onset, Cheryl Fortes and her husband, Shawn and Darlene Centeio, all of New Bedford; a brother, Richard Nobre and his wife, Betty of Dartmouth; 4 grandchildren, Sabrina, Bryce, Victoria, Elijah; several nieces and nephews. He was the father-in-law of the late George Centeio and brother of the late Arthur Nobre.
