Anthony R. Cardoza  WAREHAM — Anthony R. Cardoza, 78, of E. Wareham, died Wednesday, June 18th, at Tobey Hospital in Wareham unexpectedly. He was the husband of Lillian S. (Tavares) Cardoza. Born in Bourne, he was the son of the late Manuel J., Sr. & Antonia (Monteiro) Cardoza. A graduate of Bourne High School, Mr. Cardoza served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne during the Korean conflict. Mr. Cardoza was employed as a transporter for Martin Mobile Homes in Wareham. In his youth, Mr. Cardoza was a former middleweight boxing champion at Ft. Bragg, NC and also played semi-pro football. He was fan of Boston sports and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife; his children, the late Mark J. Cardoza, Scott J. Cardoza of E. Wareham, Anthony P. Cardoza of Virginia Beach, VA, Mary Ann Cardoza of Falmouth, John C. Cockerham of Raynham, Debra J. Ladd of Rochester and Joan C. Hill and Caron M. Krier, both of The Villages, FL; his siblings, Manuel J. Cardoza of Bourne, Joseph J. Cardoza of Wareham, Raymond D. Cardoza of New Bedford, John P. Cardoza of Pocasset, Charles S. Cardoza of Onset, Paul F. Cardoza of New Bedford, Ruth A. Harness of Royal Palm Beach, FL and George L. Cardoza of San Diego, CA. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be held on Tues., June 24th at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in the Mass. She was the wife of Jose DaRosa. Born Dec. 25, 1950, in Brava, Cape Verde, she was a daughter of Francisca (Lopes) Pinto of Brockton and the late Joao Antonio Pinto. Mrs. Miranda was a seamstress before her illness. She was devoted to her family, her grandchildren and her home and was known for always smiling. She was a Brockton resident for the past 25 years and was a communicant of St. Edith Stein Parish. She is survived by her husband, Jose DaRosa; her children, Joao DaRosa and his wife Alice, Maria DaRosa Jordan and her husband Dana, Jose DaRosa, Antonio DaRosa, Ana DaRosa and Nilton DaRosa; her grandchildren, Anthony, Anayah and Julius. She is also survived by several cousins. Born March 14, 1923, in Brava, Cape Verde, she was a daughter of the late Severino Barbosa and Julianna (Galvao) Barbosa. Mrs. Da Rosa worked in a curtain factory for several years and she enjoyed crocheting. She was a resident of Taunton before moving to Brockton and was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church in Taunton and St. Edith Stein in Brockton. She is survived by her sisters, Benvinda Faria and Maria J. Santos, both of Brockton; she is also survived by 13 nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Carolina Tavares. Adalberto O. Nereu  NEW BEDFORD — Adalberto O. "Sonny" Nereu, 78, of New Bedford, died June 12, 2008, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Mabel (Pina) Nereu. Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Francisco and Margarida (Oliveira) Nereu, he lived in New Bedford all of his life. Mr. Nereu was a communicant of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish at St. James Church. He was formerly employed by Minute Man Car Wash, Aerovox, Operation Mainstream before retiring from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. Mr. Nereu served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a founding member and past commander of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Association. He was also an active leader for the Vets drum and bugle corps. He enjoyed playing sports in his youth and later watching sports, refereeing basketball at C.Y.O., and local politics. Survivors include 2 daughters, Anna Gomes and her husband, John of Middleboro and Margaret Nereu of New Bedford; a sister, Valentina N. Almeida of New Bedford; 3 grandchildren, Joseph Anthony Nereu, Sean Michael McCormack and Jacqueline Ariana Gomes; a great-granddaughter, Madison Jean Nereu; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Manuel Nereu, Angelina Nereu and Francisco Nereu. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 AM in Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish at St. James Church followed by burial in St. John's Cemetery. Ilda Duarte PROVIDENCE, RI — Ilda (Lobo) Duarte, 66, of New Bedford died Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at Rhode Island Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Manuel J. Duarte.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the daughter of Benvinda (Duarte) Lobo of New Bedford and the late Joao A. Lobo, she lived in New Bedford since 1969.
She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mrs. Duarte was formerly employed as an inspector at Cliftex Clothing.
Survivors include her mother; two children, John Duarte of New Bedford and Ginny Pavao of New Port Richey, FL; five brothers, Antonio Lobo, Joao "John" Lobo, Jr., Manuel Lobo, Joaquim "Jack" Lobo, and Victor Lobo, all of New Bedford; a sister, Ecilda Baptista of New Bedford; three grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.

Born June 1, 1926 in San Antao, Cape Verde Island, he was a son of the late Luis F. Ramos and Teodora J. Monteiro. In addition to his beloved wife, he leaves his children, Antonio Monteiro of Pawtucket, Gil Monteiro of Warwick, Carlos Monteiro of Providence, Teodora M. Alexander of Waterford, CT, Michelle Monteiro of East Providence, and Maria Monteiro of Providence; 5 grandchildren, Carlton, Asha, Meena and Ravi Alexander and Vivianne Monteiro. He was the brother of Sergio, Carlos and Laura Monteiro, Manuel, Necas, Valente, Julietta, Margarida and Lourdes Ramos, ZiZi Ponte, Luisa Landu-Gomes and Rosa Guilherme. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
