“Ex-Policeman Gets 31 Years

Sao Paulo, Brazil (AP) –Former police investigator Geraldo Giorgino das Neves has been sentenced to 31 years in prison on charges of being a member of the Death Squad.

Neves, who was convicted Tuesday, has been accused specificially [sic] in the deaths of two criminals known as Cabo Verde and Bugio.

The former police officer’s lawyers said they would appeal the case.

Neves is one of several police officers accused of murder in connection with the Death Squad activities.  The squads were formed by policemen in several Brazilian cities to get rid of habitual criminals without resorting to jails and courts”.

Note:  The person known as Cabo Verde in this article may have been Cape Verdean.  However, the name may have denoted his complexion.  The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) conducted a study in 1976 in which people classified themselves by color, one of which was Cabo-Verde (meaning black; Cape Verdean).
