Diana R. Wheatley

NEW BEDFORD — Diana R. "Nana" (Mendes) Wheatley, 66, of New Bedford, died Friday, August 8, 2008, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of Algie F. Wheatley, Sr.

Born in East Freetown, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Lopes) Mendes, she lived in New Bedford for most of her life.

She was a member of the Susan A. Sullivou Temple 94.

Survivors include her husband; seven children, Shelley Mendes and her husband, Steven Burgo, Darlene "Skeet" Gonsalves, Doreen Mendes, Jeffrey Mendes, Sr. and his wife, Tieraney, Algie "Buddy" Wheatley, Jr. and his companion, Andrea Rose, and Joseph Wheatley, Sr. and his wife, Grace, all of New Bedford, and Curtis Wheatley, Sr., of Rhode Island; a brother, George Mendes of Fairhaven; four sisters, Adeline Delgado of Florida, Mae Pina, Cecelia Rose, and Dorothy Burr, all of New Bedford; 30 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Maria A. "Tynee" Mendes, and sister of the late Fred and Joseph Mendes.

Her Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 10 AM at the International Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 2-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
