Frank A. Lopes

NEW BEDFORD — Frank A. Lopes, 90, of New Bedford, died August 6, 2008, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Juanita M. (Santos) Haynes-Lopes and the late Lucadia (Tavares) Lopes.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Antonio and Maria Gloria Lopes, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.

Mr. Lopes was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.

He was formerly employed as an electrician at CommElectric for 35 years until retirement and also was a realtor with Century 21. Mr. Lopes appeared in many commercials with the Del Corral Modeling Agency.

He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Donald "Nonnie" Lopes, and his wife Esther, of New Bedford and Douglas Lopes of Falmouth; 3 step-daughters, Carol Haynes of New Orleans, Patricia Haynes of Providence and Dawn Haynes of Los Angeles, CA; a daughter-in-law, Lindy Lopes of New Bedford; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was the father of the late James "Jayme" Lopes, Stephen Lopes and Anthony "Bumpy" Lopes and the brother of the late James Lopes.

His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 16th at 9 AM in Our Lady of the Assumption Church.

Frank "Chico" Lopes



LOPES Frank 'Chico' Lopes died on August 6, 2008 at age 90 in New Bedford, MA. He was born on October 4, 1917 in New Bedford to immigrant parents from Sao Nicolau, Cape Verde Islands, Africa. Before coming to New Orleans he had been a merchant marine, a Con-Edison employee, and a real estate broker. In New Orleans he worked extensively with the del Corral Talent Agency. He was an active member of the Hilton Health Club. He is survived by his second wife, Juanita 'Nita' Santos Haynes Lopes, two sons, Douglas and Donald (of New Bedford), step-daughters, Patricia Haynes of Providence and Dawn Haynes of Los Angeles, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by his step-daughter, Carol L. Haynes of New Orleans and her son, Troy Anthony Spooner of New Orleans/Houston. He was preceded in death by his sons, Steven, Anthony, and Jamie and by his first wife, Lucadia. His remains will be interred at St. John's Cemetery in New Bedford.
